CDR-1209: Medieval Art: Carolingian, Romanesque and Gothic Architecture and Art

Our group of Medieval art and architecture images encompasses Carolingian monuments of the Palace Chapel of Charlemagne at Aachen and St. Michael's Hildesheim; Romanesque pilgrimage churches of La Madeleine at Vézelay, St. Sernin in Toulouse, and Ste. Foi at Conques, and the Cistercian Abbey at Fontenay; and French Gothic monuments from St. Denis with its early rib vaulted ambulatory, to the 'purest realization' of High Gothic at Amiens Cathedral. Chartres Cathedral is not only well represented architecturally but we also include examples from its wealth of sculptural detail and stained glass. From further afield are English cathedrals such as Salisbury, Cologne in Germany, and the 12-13th c. Hanseatic Town of Visby in Sweden. Sculptural examples include the bronze doors and column of Bernward at Hildesheim, relief sculpture from Moissac and Conques, the sculpture of Gislebertus at Autun, and the Annunciation figures from Reims.
