CDR-1219: Eighteenth Century Art

Styles in art ranged widely in the eighteenth century from the late Baroque in Germany with Neumann's glorious Vierzehnheiligen Church, through the French Rococo with the elegant figures in Watteau's Pilgrimage to Cythera and The Store Sign of the Art Dealer Gersaint; or the luscious figures of Diana at her Bath and the Triumph of Venus by Boucher. Reaction against Rococo sparked a return to naturalism, to a rural sentimentality in Greuze's Marriage Contract; to the subdued charm of Chardin's genre scenes of the Benediction or the Kitchen Maid, and to the expansive landscapes of Canaletto and Bellotto. The end of the century brought a renewed interest in Neoclassicism with David's Oath of Horatii and Death of Marat and the sculpture of Canova. Architectural examples range from Chiswick House to Monticello.
