CDR-1221: SR Set: Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, etc.

During the second half of the nineteenth century a group of artists challenged Parisian Academic conventions with their reassessment of art. Foremost was Edouard Manet whose landmark work Le Dejeuner sur l'Herb is included in this group of images along with the equally controversial Olympia. Monet startled the world with his open brushwork as seen in Boulevard des Capucines and Saint-Lazare Station. Among the many artists and their variety of work included in this group is Renoir and his Moulin de la Galette; Degas' Portrait of the Bellelli Family as well as bathers and dancers; and Gauguin's Ia Orana Maria. Among other artists represented are Pissarro, Morisot, Van Gogh, Seurat and Rodin. Paintings in this group glow with exceptional brilliance and close details are especially effective at showing distinctive brushwork techniques that create the illusion of sparkling light on water or the dappling effect of light and shade. updated with Bridgeman Art images in April, 2007
