CDR-1222: Seventeenth Century France
Art of early seventeenth century France displayed an interest in classicizing themes as in Et in Arcadia Ego by Poussin, and the classical formalizing of nature seen in the Debarkation of Cleopatra at Tarsus by Claude Lorraine. This sense of calm dignity is infused into Le Nain's portrait of peasant life, Family of Country People, and in the chiaroscuro religious scenes of Georges de la Tour: Adoration of the Shepherds. Elsewhere in France the official French taste of absolute monarchism influenced all the arts: from the magnificent chateau of Versailles by Hardouin-Mansart, Le Brun, and Le Vau; its expansive gardens by Le Notre; to the royal portrait of Louis XIV by Hyacinthe Rigaud.
