CDR-1145: SR Set: Artistic Japanese Postcards from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts

Postcards were extremely popular in Japan in the early 1900s; the lithographed cards replacing traditional woodblock prints in popularity. At that time Japan was rapidly entering western influenced global society and their arts began to reflect a blend of traditional styles with new western influence. Our selection of distinctive postcards from the extensive collection of Leonard Lauder at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston reflects the marriage of east/west in a range of subjects and depictions: modern images from the eleventh century Tale of Genji; contemporary depictions of traditional themes such as the Twelve Hours of the Yoshiwara, the pleasure quarters of Edo; depictions of the Russo Japanese War of 1904-1905; advertising themes; and Art Nouveau and Art Deco New Year's cards. (see "Art of the Japanese Postcard, The Leonard A. Lauder Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston," 2004, published by MFA Publications (May 2010) Please note: Academic Image Sets are offered to show the breadth of our collections. You do not need to order an entire set; you can also order individual images from each Set.
