CDR-1167: SR Set: Renaissance Portraits

Before the age of photography portraiture served the purpose of capturing likenesses, promoting status, establishing political alliances, and arranging royal marriages. Our set of Renaissance portraits includes early iconic depictions of royal personages of the 14th century, a genre that evolved into 15th and 16th century finely detailed Netherlandish works and distinctly humanistic depictions in Italy and elsewhere in southern Europe. Painters employed various devices including pose, costume, setting, and accoutrements in order to capture the character or social position of their sitters.
