CDR-1297: SR Set: Gothic Architecture
Building upon Romanesque foundations (CDR-1295), this Image Set explores the soaring heights and airiness of Gothic architecture, not only from its cradle in France at St. Denis, but its spread to England, Italy and Germany. Each region and culture adapted and modified the Gothic style to suit its own aesthetic as well as its local materials and building techniques. The availability of limestone, sandstone, and brick when combined with ribbed vaults, flying buttresses and pointed arches all served to enrich the glorification of the church in the Middle Ages.
