CDR-1339: SR Set: Major Religions: Hinduism

Hinduism is the world's oldest religion, with its origins preceding recorded history. Indeed, the oldest scriptures of Hinduism, the Vedas, were composed ca.1800 years BCE. One of the basic Hindu concepts is a reverence for all life, as well as the belief that each individual creates his own destiny by the way in which he lives his life. Our images are largely from the period between the ninth and nineteenth centuries with the first half of the our set featuring a variety of distinctive temples, some of which are lushly textured in sculpted decor and mythical figures. Indian miniature painting composes the majority of the second part of the set. The practice of making illustrated manuscripts developed late in the religion's history, and the varied painting styles that ensued illustrated literary or even musical themes (ragas) as well as mythologies and escapades of the gods.
